As you might have noticed, this space has been a bit inactive since last September. I’ve been thinking about this blog a lot recently, how it fits into my life and its future. There aren’t enough musings to warrant a full, thoughtful post on each, so I figured I’d share some tidbits of all of them…
I started this blog as a creative outlet and to be more sustainable and intentional about my clothing. Eventually, I found myself buying the most recently released Indie patterns and fabric from all the great fabric stores just for the sake of “keeping up.” I felt as if I was consuming, consuming, consuming and getting overwhelmed with all the things in my sewing area. It wasn’t very pleasant, it kind of defeated the purpose of all this, and so I stopped sewing for a while.
At one point, I intended to set up ads on my blog as a way to make money. But then, I realized that I would just be encouraging other people to spend money and consume things that may or may not make them happy. So, I decided against that. Extra income would be great, but I don’t want to perpetuate such consumerist societal norms.
Sustainability has become increasingly more important to me over the past few years. In fact, there’s a pretty decent chance I may decide to pursue a career in the renewable energy industry instead of astrophysics after I graduate. Admitting that to myself, and coming to terms with the fact that I may not end up in the field I’ve been dreaming about since a child has been more difficult than I anticipated. On top of that comes the fear that I’ve disappointed my advisor & collaborators, the difficulty of researching a brand new career field, and the desire to soak up all the astrophysics that I can before I graduate. It’s been a lot.
Andy and I got engaged last fall! We’re really very excited, and wedding planning has been fun so far. I’ve been struggling with how to balance stress-free with environmentally friendly wedding activities. My desire to have a small wedding at city hall then go to brunch was vetoed, so we are in fact having a Wedding (with a capital “w”!). It will still be fun, and my goal is for it to be as environmentally-friendly as possible! I’ve contemplated writing up some blog posts about that, but we shall see.
Some of my posts have become surprisingly popular due to Pinterest. Remember that Passport Cover I posted almost exactly 2 years ago? It’s been highly viewed in the past few months!
I’d really like to incorporate more sustainability and Earth-friendly content into my blog, so stay tuned if that ends up happening! On the flip side, I don’t want to be one of those misinformed, green-washing sustainability advocates that I often stumble across on the internet. The balance is delicate, but I’m learning.
Last week I got back from a trip to Hawaii, so here’s a photo of a gecko and flower that may make your day 🙂
Thanks for reading some of my musings 🙂 Watch this space for some future changes!
